Shawnee began operations in 1968 and was instantly the largest commuter airline in Florida.

Flights to the Lake Buena Vista STOLport at Walt Disney World began on October 22, 1971.
The airline ceased all flights on December 28, 1972 but returned to the air on March 29, 1973.
In Spring 1975, Chicago investor Arthur Allyn purchased controlling interest of Shawnee, Air South, and Florida Airlines. By the end of 1975 their schedules were consolidated although the airlines continued to operate as separate entities.
Shawnee was sold in 1977 and shut down a second time. The company was purchased by Air Miami and returned as Shawnee International Airlines in 1978.
Shawnee International ceased operations a third and final time in 1980 with most assets going to Air Miami.
